WATCHER reads the news the way an analyst would, at a scale no analyst could, and looks for divergence — the world breaking from its expected norms. It's named for Rehoboam, the machine in Westworld — and it's built to be that machine's opposite.
In the fiction, Rehoboam wasn't a forecaster. It surveilled everyone, assigned every person a scripted path, predicted when they'd die, toppled governments, and quietly disposed of the outliers who wouldn't fit. Its creator said the job wasn't to predict the future "but to create it." Prediction was never the product — control was. It was Laplace's demon handed a throne.
WATCHER inverts every axis of it:
• It reads published news — no persons, no private data. Only what outlets already printed.
• It publishes everything — provenance on every fact, the model named, DOCUMENTED vs PROJECTED tagged, its own limits written into the design. No black box, no ad-speak certainty.
• Its confidence decays with distance — a far-out forecast tops out low, and every projection carries a resolve-by date and a signal to watch, so it can be marked right or wrong. It never asserts certainty and acts on it.
• It aims up, not down — an institution describing itself gets the lowest trust, because the least reliable narrator about power is power itself. Confidence comes from convergence: when opposite sources independently land on the same fact.
• It doesn't write the future — it watches, says plainly what it thinks might come, and invites you to check.
The name earns itself by being the reversal: the same appetite — read everything, find the pattern — with the opposite posture. No control, no secrecy, no certainty, pointed at power instead of people.
Which is why an unaudited confidence number would betray the whole idea. Asserting a number and never getting scored is exactly the machine's move. So every forecast carries a resolve-by date and a signal to watch — built to be scored. The scoreboard that actually tallies hits against confidence — that shows whether 72% means 72% — is the next thing being built; until it exists, these numbers are unproven, and WATCHER says so. A watch working toward a track record, not a throne.
